SEO Migration Checklist for Business Websites

A practical checklist for moving a business website — new domain, new platform, or new URL structure — without losing existing search visibility.

A site migration — a URL structure change, a platform switch, a domain change — is one of the highest-risk technical SEO events a business can go through. Traffic loss from a poorly executed migration is common, and it’s almost always avoidable with a deliberate process.

Map every existing URL before touching anything

Before any change ships, a complete inventory of existing indexed URLs (from Search Console and a real crawl) establishes the baseline that needs to be preserved or deliberately redirected — skipping this step is the single most common cause of migration traffic loss.

Every old URL needs a deliberate destination

A 1:1 redirect map — old URL to new URL, ideally to the most relevantly matching new page rather than a blanket redirect to the homepage — preserves both user experience and accumulated ranking signals. A generic “redirect everything to the homepage” approach loses most of the value a proper migration could have preserved.

Use real 301 redirects, not client-side or meta-refresh redirects

Server-level 301 redirects pass ranking signal in a way that JavaScript-based or meta-refresh redirects don’t reliably replicate — this is a case where the technically correct implementation matters, not just the visible user experience.

Even with redirects in place, updating internal links to point directly at new URLs (rather than routing through a redirect chain) is both faster for users and cleaner for crawlers — redirect chains should be treated as a safety net, not the permanent internal linking structure.

Monitor closely after launch, not just once

Search Console coverage reports, organic traffic, and rankings for key pages should be monitored closely in the weeks after a migration — catching an unexpected drop early, while the cause is still identifiable, is far easier than diagnosing it months later.

Where this fits

A migration executed carefully preserves years of accumulated SEO value; one executed carelessly can lose most of it. A Free Strategy Audit includes migration planning support for a business considering a platform or URL-structure change.
