Image SEO for Local Business Websites

A practical guide to image optimization for local business websites — file size, alt text, filenames, and where images actually drive real traffic.

Contents

Images affect SEO in two distinct ways that are easy to conflate: their file weight directly impacts page performance, and their metadata (alt text, filenames, surrounding context) affects both accessibility and whether they can be discovered through image search.

File size is usually the bigger, more overlooked issue

A single unoptimized hero image can undo most of a page’s other performance work — modern formats (WebP, AVIF) with proper compression and responsive sizing for different viewports should be the default, not an afterthought applied only when performance becomes a visible problem.

Alt text serves accessibility first, SEO second

Alt text exists primarily to describe an image to users who can’t see it — writing genuinely descriptive alt text that serves that purpose (rather than stuffing it with keywords) is both the right accessibility practice and, done honestly, the more effective SEO approach. An image of a completed kitchen remodel deserves alt text describing what’s actually shown, not a generic keyword phrase repeated across every image on the page.

Descriptive filenames are a small, easy win

A filename like kitchen-remodel-before-after-oak-cabinets.jpg gives both users and search engines more context than IMG_4821.jpg — this costs nothing to do correctly and is worth building into a standard content-publishing workflow.

Image search is a real, often-ignored traffic source

For visually driven categories — before/after project photos, product images, portfolio work — image search can be a meaningful and underused traffic source. Genuinely original, well-optimized images (not stock photos) perform better here than generic, widely-reused imagery.

Never use misleading or fabricated imagery

Stock photos presented as if they show a business’s real work or real location — a fake “storefront” or fake “team” photo — is both a trust problem if discovered and, in some contexts, a genuine deceptive-practices risk. Original, honest imagery is the only real approach.

Where this fits

Image optimization is a foundational, often-overlooked technical detail with real performance and discoverability impact. A Free Strategy Audit includes a review of image handling for a specific site.
